The Oklahoma Redbud Tree, ‘Cercis reniformis,’ was discovered in 1964, growing wild in the Arbuckle Mountains of Okalhoma. It features glossy green foliage and produces clusters of tine, wine-red, pea-like flowers that will bloom profusely on the branches and mature trunks for about two to three weeks in early spring, before the leaves emerge. It is the perfect small tree for lawns, woodland gardens or naturalized areas, as should be planted in partial shade in hot climates.


Osage Orange

The Osage Orange Tree, ‘Maclura pomifera,’ will bear inedible fruit that resembles a woody orange. It is native to Midwest and Southeast United States and has bright green summer foliage with a yellow fall color. A yellow-orange dye can be extracted from the wood, and is often used as a substitute for fustic and aniline dyes for arts and industry. It is also known as the hedge apple tree, because it was originally planted in thicket-like hedgerows, before barbed wire was invented.

This fast growing tree is also known as the White Birch and Canoe Birch.

In the autumn, the foliage will change to a yellow color. A cultivar of the Green ash, it is very hardy and drought tolerant. This seedless tree is widely used for its shade, and planted in the center of a lawn.


Paw Paw

The Paw Paw Tree, ‘Asimina triloba,’ will grow to an average height of fifteen feet at maturity. Prospering in moist soils, this multi-stemmed shrub or small tree features a rounded top that will give it a semi-tropical appearance. It has a short trunk and is often placed at the edge of a woodland area or as an under-story tree. It features nodding bright purple flowers in the spring, and is recognized by its ‘sleepy’ summer foliage, that turns to a brilliant yellow in the fall. For pollination of the flowers, two trees must be grown near each other.

Persimmon

The American Persimmon Tree, ‘Diospyrus virginiana,’ features dark green leaves that conceal its small, fragrant, white flowers. Its pale orange fruits will ripen after the first frost. The fruits are edible, and are often eaten by wild birds and animals, which then transport the seeds to old fields. For this reason, it is often the first invader of old fields. This is a native tree, with rather leathery, dark green foliage. Fruiting can begin in only six year under good conditions, and will last for over fifty years.


Pignut Hickory

It features medium green, broad, flat foliage that will turn a bright yellow color for a showy display in the fall. Its firm, gray bark may be marked in a diamond pattern by shallow furrows and narrow ridges. The nuts of this shade tree are a very important food for squirrels and chipmunks. It grows best in fairly rich, well draining to dry soils.


Pin Oak

The Pin Oak Tree, ‘Quercus palustris,’ is one of the fastest growing of all oak trees, and can grow twelve to fifteen feet in as few as five to seven years. It has moderate water requirements, as well as a moderate tolerance to salt and alkali soils. It can prosper in a wide range of soil types, including wet soils. Its limbs will to droop with age, and young trees and the lower branches of older trees will hold their leaves throughout the winter. This deciduous tree is probably the most widely planted native oak tree for landscaping purposes.

Adaptable to most soil types and moisture levels, the Flowering Almond is hardy over a very wide range.
