Horsechestnut Buckeye

The Horsechestnut Buckeye Tree, ‘Aesculus hippocastanum,’ is a wonderful flowering tree with long, dense clusters of single, bright red flowers that are very attractive. The flowers are a favorite for hummingbirds. This deciduous tree is beautiful, round-headed and perfectly suited for smaller yards. It is widely planted in parks, avenues and large gardens. Its large seeds are produced in leathery-cased fruits, with short prickles, and are released in the autumn.

Hybrid Poplar

The Poplar Hybrid Tree, ‘Populus Hybrid,’ is a fast growing tree. Under average and normal conditions, it can grow up to six feet per year. In just three years, it will be about twenty feet tall and fifteen feet wide, and will reach a mature height of over seventy feet. The Poplar Hybrid tree is wind, disease and insect resistant and can grow in the cold as far north as Canada. Living from thirty to fifty years, it is often used to reforest an area after a fire, or to reclaim land after strip mining. In landscape situations, it is usually grown as a hedge, screen, windbreak or street tree.

Grandiflora Hydrangea

The Grandiflora Hydrangea, ‘Hydrangea paniculata,’ came to America from Japan in 1861. Since then, it has become a common addition to American gardens, and is highly valued for its vigor and dependability of bloom. It sterile flowers will appear in August, and persist until the first hard frost. The large, conical-shaped white flower heads will turn to a pink color in the autumn with gray-green leaves. This is still one of the best-loved varieties of Hydrangea. The plants grow to a height of over six feet at maturity and the blooms can be easily dried for decorations.

Nikko Blue Hydrangea

The Nikko Blue Hydrangea, ‘Hydrangea macrophylla,’ is one of the best varieties of Hydrangea available. Its blue blossoms are produced on a plant of very strong constitution, making a fantastic show of color in the spring or summer garden. The flowers bloom somewhat earlier than other varieties. They start out as a cream color with blue margins, and slowly fade to a solid blue at maturity. It also has variegated foliage, which only makes the plants that much more attractive.

Oakleaf Hydrangea

The Oakleaf Hydrangea, ‘Hydrangea quercifolia,’ features elongated, white flowers that slowly turn pinkish as they mature. This upright, deciduous shrub has a broad, rounded habit and generally grows to a height of four to six feet. Best grown in fertile, medium wet, well draining soil in full sun to partial shade, Oakleaf is commonly used for backgrounds, accents or specimens, foundation plantings or as a hedge. The root zone should be mulched in the summer to help provide more consistent moisture. If pruning is required, which is rarely is, it should take place after the flowering season.

Iceburg Rose

The Iceberg Rose features an abundance of long, cool white buds. These buds will open to large, clean white double roses on this Floribunda. Its light green glossy foliage is the perfect backdrop for the flowers. Iceberg has been the standard against which many roses are measured for forty years. The high centered blooms are produced in mass from the end of the last frost in the spring to the beginning of the first frost the following winter. Iceberg was inducted into the World Federation of Rose Societies Hall of Fame in 1983.

Improved Duarte Plum Tree

The Improved Duarte Plum tree will produce very large, heart shaped fruits that are blood red in color. Their excellent flavor is widely regarded as one of the best available. The fruits of the Improved Duarte Plum tree dry well and have very long storage lives. When cooked, these plums have a slightly tart taste. This prolific produces grows wonderful plums.

Indian Summer Crabapple Tree

The Indian Summer Crabapple, with its sweeping branches, symmetrical shapes and modest proportions, will add beauty as well as a good source of pollen for other fruit trees. The abundant pink flowers of the Indian Summer Crabapple will be present with the King bloom of Red Delicious apple trees. The bright red fruits, nearly an inch in diameter, will follow the flowers. This tree has excellent disease resistance, and can tolerate cold, shifts in temperature, semi-arid climates and brisk winds.

False Indigo Indigo Bush

The False Indigo Bush, ‘Amorpha fruticosa,’ features fragrant foliage that has the compound pinnate leaf form that is most typical of the Pea family. This is a somewhat leggy shrub that can range in height from six to twenty feet and in width from five to fifteen feet. It is often bushiest on its upper third. The third-inch wide flowers are purple-blue in color with orange anthers, and grow on three to six inch upright spikes. They are most commonly grown as a large shrub or small tree in locations that have plenty of water. Native to the western half of the United States, the False Indigo Bush will easily attract butterflies.

Ingrid Bergman Rose

The Ingrid Berman rose is a variety of hybrid tea. It features full, double blooms and a velvety soft texture. This is a favorite rose among gardeners worldwide, primarily due to its combination of deep red flowers and dark green foliage. This flower was inducted into the World Federation of Rose Societies Hall of Fame in 2000.

Intrigue Rose

The Intrigue rose features a colorful plum flower in the Floribunda family. Its bloom is very pretty and showy, and looks great paired with the attractive, glossy green foliage. The lemon fragrance will fill any garden air. The blooms have twenty petals each and are heavy repeat bloomers. This AARS winner loves full sunlight.

Italian Plum Tree

The Italian Plum tree produces medium to large sized fruit. The plums have a dark purple skin covering a yellowish green flesh. The flesh separates freely from the pit. When cooked, these plums turn to a dark wine color. The large, freestone fruits are very sweet and perfect for eating fresh as well and drying or canning. One of the most widely planted plum varieties in the West, the Italian plum is a very heavy bearer.

Japanese Red Maple

The Japanese Red Maple Tree, ‘Acer palmatum autropurpeum,’ produces leaves that are reddish purple in the spring and will change go a brilliant color of red in the autumn. This very versatile species is by far one of the most popular ornamental plants available. The Classic Japanese maple is a small, very showy deciduous tree that can be used to create a very unique bonsai tree. Most commonly grown as a single specimen, the Japanese Red Maple will also work very well in borders or groupings.

John Franklin Rose

The John Franklin rose has deep red, semi-double flowers that are cupped and fringed. The blooms are displayed in very large clusters. This compact, bushy shrub will bloom non-stop from summer through the first frost. John Franklin is a disease resistant variety of rose with dark green foliage. This plant is in the Explorer series of roses.

The Just Joey rose features large, ruffled apricot colored blooms. The fruity fragrance of this English superstar will fill any garden air. This delightful rose will work in nearly any garden situation. It was inducted into the World Federation of Rose Societies Hall of Fame in 1994.
